Montessori and play - how we montessori

The Montessori philosophy is based on the belief that young children have an absorbent mind, absorbing their environment by just being in it. At this age it is believed the child is not yet capable of abstract thinking and don't know what is real and what isn't. The child needs to know and understand the real world before they can appreciate and participate in a made up world of fantasy. 

This is also so they can gain a true and accurate understanding of our world, to find order in our world and which allows our world to make sense.

This is why Montessori doesn't encourage fantasy play. In most Montessori schools you will not find a play corner or dress ups. 

Montessori believed

To be responsible as parents for the toys in our home is a major challenge for us. Isn't it difficult as a parent in these abundant and wealthy times not to have a surplus of toys.

Keeping in mind Montessori's thinking we carefully consider the toys we allow in our home, those we purchase and those allowed as gifts. We consider if the toys;  

are real and based in reality  make sense and are logical  give the child pleasure and joy  satisfy a need in the child are based on the child's interests lead to spontaneous play are quality and will not break (or loose a piece) too easily

Most of our toys meet these considerations and some don't. The only toys we don't allow as gifts are those that promote violence.

While we prefer Caspar to have as many real experiences as he can we do have a lot of toys that promote role/pretend play. While most of these have been given as gifts I find that Caspar is strongly drawn towards them. Playing dress ups is one of his favourite things to do. 

Role play is a form of imitation, the child is imitating the real adult world. I feel that role play helps him make sense of the world. He is pretending to cook, to fight fires and this play has some basis in reality. When I was pregnant and making regular visits to the doctor, Caspar would very often dress up and play doctors. I think this is a way for the child to process what is going on.
