Poultry Processing Equipment

Meyn-Ishida selected for major poultry processing project in Poland

The project involves the delivery and installation of a complete Wall to Wall plant adjacent to the existing factory for Wipasz in Poland, and will be among the most valuable to be initiated in the European poultry processing industry this year.

Wipasz, one of Poland’s leading animal feed suppliers, first diversified into poultry processing in 2010 with the acquisition of a 5,000 bph (birds per hour) facility.

The first task of Meyn-Ishida will be to replace the existing live bird arrival system and to upgrade the current bulk pack operation with advanced weighing and tray packing capabilities to enable it to produce a more sophisticated range of products. The next step will be to deliver and install Meyn-Ishida equipment for a completely new processing plant. Both steps will be accomplished during 2011-2013.

“Our commitment to the poultry processing industry is demonstrated by our choice of state-of-the-art technology that will put Wipasz on a level with Europe’s top producers” says Józef Wisniewski, CEO of Wipasz. Meyn-Ishida combines the poultry processing expertise of Meyn with the weighing, packing and end-of-line knowhow of Ishida to offer a full range of integrated systems and equipment. The alliance has already been awarded several high value international contracts, including fully integrated plants in Russia (Valujki and Tambov) and Chile (Ariztia).

The award of the contract followed visits by Wipasz to existing installations, during which the alliance was able to demonstrate the added value of its integrated solutions. Meyn-Ishida expertise in optimising the use of space in poultry processing plants was another important factor, as there were major space constraints at the existing plant.

Processing Under Producer/Grower Exemptions :: Badger's Millside Farm

If you’re a small scale poultry producer, you are most likely aware of the USDA poultry processing exemptions (P.L 90-492). The exemptions allow small poultry producers to process chickens/turkeys/ducks without a bird-by-bird inspection. If you raise poultry (e.g., chickens, ducks, turkeys) to sell, and you’re not versed on the exemptions, you should be. Act 106 in Pennsylvania is bringing a new visibility to farm markets specifically and food safety in general. The extra scrutiny will ultimately make more producers prove they comply with the USDA poultry processing exemptions.

For now, I’m most interested in the exemption that impacts poultry producers who sell at markets, to restaurants, on farm retail, and to distributors because where you can legally sell is dictated by how you butcher your chickens.

As a producer, if you use a custom processor, your birds should be presold, and you can’t legally sell at farm market, to distributors, or on-farm retail. When I say on-farm retail, I mean you have a chicken in your freezer and a customer strolls up to your door and says, “I’d like to buy a chicken.”

The relevant exemption is the Producer/Grower exemption, which allows a producer to raise 20,000 birds in a year. When you operate under the producer/grower exemption, you can sell to more channels: farm markets, distributors, restaurants, hotels, institutions, retail.

The catch with a producer/grower exemption is that you must process your chickens, ducks, and turkeys on your farm. On on-farm processing facility can be an expensive proposition and quite honestly, some producers aren’t interested in butchering chickens, turkeys, or ducks.

That’s where our mobile processing unit comes into play. The producer/grower exemption states:

FSIS has determined that when a grower producing poultry under the Producer/Grower Exemption rents slaughtering or processing equipment and operates such equipment on his or her premises, he or she is not disqualified for the Producer/Grower Exemption. In this situation, the grower is not required to request an exemption from the Administrator of FSIS. However, the slaughter or processing unit may not be used to slaughter or process another person’s poultry while it is on the renter’s premises.

Not only do we deliver a mobile processing unit to your farm, but we supply labor to help you butcher your chickens. You can read more about the poultry processing exemptions through this FSIS guide .
