Emerging Wireless Security Technology Gaining Momentum in Self Storage Industry

The success of a storage facility depends on its ability to keep a tenant’s items safe and secure.  New security technology available to self storage owners and operators engages tenants in the process and can generate more income while saving money on avoiding higher-priced security systems. The new radio-frequency (RF) wireless-alert systems warn self-storage tenants of a possible intrusion via text message within 60 seconds of an incident.

These new high-tech systems act as a crime deterrent and cost a fraction of the price of a hard-wire security system, with payback for the investment taking about 18 months.  The devices can also generate extra revenue if operators charge a rental fee for the devices or add on the cost of the device to the rental rate.

When a RF device detects the slightest tamper, the authorized renter of the unit receives a text message containing the date and time the unit was opened. This technology, only available with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) enables a constant communication link between each activated wireless device and the onsite reader.

QuikStor  and  PureRFif  are two such companies that offer the technology to the self storage industry. The wireless devices cannot just be used on storage units, but also RVs, autos, boats and portable containers. The wireless door RF device can be installed on the outside of each storage unit. This way it acts as a highly-visible crime deterrent. The electronics, antenna and reed switches are securely encased in a high-impact, weather-sealed case. The compact wireless door sensors are not affected by hurricane rains, abusive environments or corrosive coastal air. The 20-year batteries are pre-installed and guaranteed to last for at least 10-years, even when located on the busy front door of a management office. Unlike a wired security system, there are no wires to protect, pavement to cut or conduit to run to each of your units.

The door installation system is the most common device on the market and is installed with the tenant’s padlock. It must be opened to properly unlock the unit door. Other dives on the market are the internal device installed inside the unit and the motion detector device. The inside-unit device is tamper free and is instantly activated when the standard mini-lock is disengaged from the perimeter track attachment prior to the door opening.  The motion device instantly detects any motion disturbance and is ideal for RVs, boats, autos or individual valuable assets within a storage unit.
