HP EliteBook 8560p

Work hard, play hard. That should be HP's motto for the EliteBook 8560p. Though this workstation includes the typical suite of features that business users expect, it also has the multimedia chops to take off its tie and run consumer applications after hours. With multiple docking station and battery configurations, a TPM  security chip for use with Bitlocker encryption, and an  ExpressCard expansion slot combined with excellent audio, decent 3D performance, and an available Blu-ray drive option, it’s a business notebook that can also have a little fun on the side.    

Prices start at $999 for the base model, which is equipped with Intel’s Next-Gen Core i5 processor. Our test unit, priced at $1,499, ups the ante with a Core i7 processor, a high-resolution screen, and a number of added features. Overall, our biggest quibble with this system is its price, which isn't even that high. You'll struggle to find a reason (other than sheer size) to not want the 8560p.

The EliteBook 8560p is appropriately professional in design, lacking garish LEDs, prominent logos, or patterned plastic. That’s not to say it’s not stylish, though. Its sharp, squared-off metal lid and wrist-rest have a classy platinum color, while the bottom is an understated matte-black plastic. At 6.25 pounds and 1.34x14.72x9.67 inches, it’s fairly typical in size and weight for a notebook in the mainstream class.

Though it’s not particularly hefty, the EliteBook 8560p is designed to be tough. New to this model is HP’s DisplaySafe design, which runs a rubber border all the way around the edges of the lid to protect the screen.HP says the device is designed to meet military standards (MIL-STD-810G, to be exact) for drops, vibration, dust, humidity, altitude and high temperature.

On the bottom of the laptop, you'll find connectors for docking bay and an external secondary battery. But what's really cool is that the battery release also frees up a big sign on the bottom, giving easy access to the memory slots, hard drive bay, and internal wireless cards for future improvements.

You'd be hard pressed to find an expansion port you need the 8560p EliteBook missing. It has a whopping five USB ports, of just about every variety: two USB 3.0 ports, one eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port, one USB 2.0 charging port, and a lone basic USB 2.0 connector. There’s an IEEE 1394 (FireWire) port for connecting a video camera or external drive, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and microphone and headphone jacks. And flashing back to the notebooks of yesteryear, on the back you’ll find a 56K dial-up modem and an RS-232 serial port.

I purchased three replacement headphones for my iphone 3g and initially was pleased with the idea of getting all of that for the low price of $15. I went into this transaction knowing that I was getting the quality that I was willing to pay for and I wasn’t disappointed. It took me less than a month to cycle through all three (and I pretty kind when it comes to taking care of my stuff). The headphones all still work but the microphones, the reason for the purchase, were quick to go.

I brought this issue up with the vendor and they made it right by processing a refund for me. Thanks.

I have no issue with the vendor, just with the product.

I got this product not expecting to be blown away but I thought Id give it a shot. Ive bought many covers from Amazon and have been really satisfied by what i’ve recieved but this was not the case here. It looks sturdy but it is a tad bigger then the frame of the iPhone most notisable in the sides, they kinda bulge out a bit, not much but enough to look cheap. My bigges dislike is the rubber on the buttons, they are very hard and unresponsive. Overall, I would skip this.
