Talkin' Trilogies - Issue #4 - The "High School Musical" Trilogy

The story focuses around two central characters, Captain of the basketball team Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez, the bookish nerd who have a chance meeting on the last night of a holiday break. The pair are thrown up on to a stage and are forced to sing, where they both discover that they can not only both sing very well, they both secretly love it. As luck would have it, Gabriella has now moved to the same school as Troy which would allow their romance to bloom.The audition for the role pair duet music schools in winter and get the parts - but now they must lead double lives, as neither of their respective clubs will allow them to do both. , Barsocchini woven together an entertaining if a little basic script. The characters are cliche, the dialogue is stiff and the plot is incredibly standard. It has a simple message, "do what you want to do, not what society thinks you do", which is found in many Disney productions. However, despite these negative reviews, the film has been accepted on the first draft. “It was the first time in my career, and probably the last time, that a company greenlit the first draft… they said, ‘we really like it and we’re sending it to directors” he told . As well as bringing Barsocchini’s script to life, Ortega also took on the role of choreographing the dance sequences for the film along with Charles “Chuckie” Kaplow. “Kenny [was a] real stickler for choreographing for the camera” he said at a Q & A session for the Choreography Media Awards in 2009, “There was one day when we we’re working on the basketball number and I had done the choreography for the basketball team, Kenny was in another room with another group. He came in and he saw what we had done and the first thing he said was, ‘where is the camera’”.Ortega could have simply turned these numbers as dance music segments flashy video style, but because he cared about the project and wanted to succeed, he really put in the effort to have the movie might look like a good movie, rather than cheap for TV effort. in a film that is all style and no substance - a beautiful shell with an empty core. And at the core of the film it is. Despite the efforts of Ortega, the main problems with the script could not be overcome. The dialogue is hokey and the story is a cliché and base.

The Shadows “The Final Tour” Eagle Rock Ent: “The Final Tour” clocks in at an impressive 2+ hours in length, a comprehensive set spanning 40+ songs. And yes, this is just one show, one night. The Shadows figured that if they’re going to go out, they might just as well go out on top, and with this final (literally) DVD release, Bruce Welch, Hank Marvin and Brian Bennett, collectively known as the latest incarnation of the Shadows, do just that. Where the DVD lacks in bonus content – the only included being a 45-minute interview with Marvin and Welch – it makes up for in live material. The trio rock through basically every track you’d ever want them to perform during what is their proverbial curtain call, and as mentioned, the boys will bring you back in time throughout their entire catalog with a set list complete with over 40 offerings.

With “the Final Tour” you’ll also get to experience two of the things that made the band what they are today – a combination of over-the-top, hokey choreography and technically precise guitar theatrics. And if you can overlook the lackluster camera shots of the live crowd, which for one reason or another come off as amateur, then “the Final Tour” will be a better viewing for you, though you don’t have to worry too much about those jittery moments detracting much from the show itself. Bear in mind, the quality of the actual concert is superb to say the very least (we’re talking 1080i video here). And add to that pristine sound (DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio), and you have yourself a very top notch live concert experience.    

“The Final Tour” is a release that will be sure to more than please current, longtime fans of the band, but it also should succeed in entertaining just about anyone who takes the time to watch it. It’s just good enough to do so.
